Singing lessons are more personal than lessons on almost any other instrument, because the instrument is the student. You work on breath and tone, choose repertoire that suits the voice and put it in the right key. And because singers hear themselves differently from the inside, recordings are indispensable. Repertoire in the right key
With the chord editor you put a lyric sheet with chords above the words into the lesson. Chorus too high for your student? Transpose every chord at once to a key that suits the voice. Whoever is accompanying, you, the student or a pianist, can tap any chord to see the shape on guitar or piano. Add the original recording as a YouTube, Spotify or Apple Music block in the same lesson, so the student can listen to the original with the lyrics in front of them.
You can also give each student a playlist of tracks from Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music or YouTube: songs to learn, or singers to listen to for a particular style.
Warm-ups and breathing exercises as regular homework
A warm-up routine only works if students do it at home. Record your warm-ups on video once and set them as assignments in the practice list. Students see what to do this week in their portal, start a practice session with the timer and mark each assignment as practised. That earns XP, and practising every day builds a streak. Before the lesson you can see who has genuinely been working on their voice, and who is hoping you won't ask.
Prefer students to sing against a drone or a backing track? Add it as an audio block linking to the file, or as a YouTube video. The free online tuner helps singers check their pitch against a reference note, and a metronome block keeps scale exercises at a steady tempo.
Feedback on recordings
With “Ask your teacher” a student sends you a message with a short video: the tricky bridge, say, or a high note that keeps cracking. You watch it in your messages and reply, with no WeTransfer or WhatsApp needed. In the lesson you score each assignment on a fixed scale from “still needs practice” to “can apply it”, so after a few months you can show a student how far they've come.
To capture a melody quickly there's the sing-to-notation block: sing a simple tune into the microphone and it appears as notation. To learn a tricky run, students can slow a track down with the free slow down audio tool, which keeps the pitch the same.
In the studio: lyrics at eye level
Singers shouldn't be hunched over a phone. With Teach Mode you put the lesson on a second screen or TV in the studio, paired by scanning a QR code, so the student can stand, breathe and read the lyrics at eye level. You decide from your own screen what's shown, whether that's the lyric sheet, a warm-up video or the original track, and YouTube stays in sync when you pause.
Choirs, vocal groups and graded exams
Running a vocal group or a pop choir? Put the singers in a group and assign a song to everyone at once; practice and scores still stay per singer. A fixed weekly group lesson goes into the schedule next to your one-to-one lessons.
If you prepare singers for graded exams with ABRSM, Trinity, LCM or RSL, set each song and the technical work as separate assignments and follow them individually. Musicdott isn't linked to exam boards; you build the path yourself.
Showcases, scheduling and admin
Vocal schools often end a term with a showcase. With events you set up a concert or open mic night with a programme, and students and parents let you know whether they're coming.
