- Find a tempo you can play cleanly. Start well below your target, at a speed where you can play the passage without a single mistake.
- Play it four times in a row. Only when it is clean four times running do you move on. One lucky take doesn't count.
- Raise the tempo in small steps. Add 4 or 5 BPM at a time with the + button. If it falls apart, drop back one step.
- Write the tempo down. Noting the BPM you reached each day turns vague practice into visible progress.
This page versus the full metronome
The metronome above is a quick 4/4 click with tap tempo, a visual pulse and an accent on beat 1, ideal for checking the tempo of a song. The full metronome in Musicdott adds what you need for structured practice:
- 20 to 300 BPM, with preset buttons for common tempos;
- time signatures 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, 5/4 and 7/8;
- eighth-note subdivisions and an accent you can switch off;
- a speed trainer that raises the tempo gradually over a set number of minutes;
- accurate timing that keeps going when the browser tab is in the background.
Tips for music teachers
Put the target tempo in the homework, not just the exercise: "groove 3 at 80 BPM" is a clearer task than "practise groove 3". In Musicdott you can add a metronome block to a lesson, and students log their practice so you see who is actually putting the work in. Read more about the practice tracking appand the music lesson platform, or try the free slow-down audio playerand online tuner.
Frequently asked questions
Is this online metronome free?+
Yes. The metronome on this page works straight away in your browser, with no download and no account. The full metronome in Musicdott is free to use as well.
How does tap tempo work?+
Press the Tap button at least twice in time with the music. The metronome measures the gaps between your taps and sets the BPM to match. Tap four or five times for a steadier result.
What tempo range does it cover?+
The metronome on this page runs from 40 to 200 BPM. The full metronome in Musicdott goes from 20 to 300 BPM and shows the Italian tempo marking, from Grave to Prestissimo.
Can I change the time signature?+
The quick metronome on this page counts in 4/4 with an accent on beat 1. In Musicdott you can choose 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, 5/4 or 7/8, switch the accent on or off and add eighth-note subdivisions.
Is there a speed trainer?+
Yes, in the Musicdott metronome. You set how many BPM to add and over how many minutes, and the tempo rises gradually while you play.
Why practise with a metronome at all?+
A metronome shows you whether you are really steady or just think you are. Practising slowly in time and then raising the tempo in small steps builds speed without building in mistakes.
