Posture and bowing: seeing from a distance

A lot of what goes wrong on the cello happens at home, out of sight: a collapsed wrist, a bow drifting towards the fingerboard. With “Ask your teacher” students send you a short video of a passage, and you reply on bow direction, contact point or intonation. In the lesson, a video of you demonstrating sits next to the sheet music, so the student sees what a good bow arm looks like before they practise.

Students can also play a reference recording slower, at the same pitch, with the free slow down audio tool, to hear the phrasing and bow changes they're aiming for.

Études, pieces and sheet music

Upload études and pieces as PDF, attach MusicXML to a song in your repertoire, or embed a MuseScore or flat.io score. Organise lessons into categories by book or level, whether that's Suzuki, a classical method or Popper studies, and assign the next one when a student is ready. Each piece becomes an assignment you score from “still needs practice” to “can apply it”, so a student's history across a whole method stays visible.

Ensembles and chamber music

For a cello ensemble or a string quartet, put the students in a group, schedule a fixed group lesson and show the score on a second screen in the room with Teach Mode. Each player still has their own practice list and scores. Recitals and concerts are events with a programme, and students and parents RSVP from their own portal.

Intonation, tempo and admin

A metronome block sets the starting tempo for a passage, and the free online tuner and metronome help between lessons. Home practice that lasts for years

Cellists who stay for years need a practice habit that survives exam season, school pressure and the summer holidays. For you, the more useful part is the history. Each piece is scored over the weeks, so at a parents' evening you can show what has genuinely improved instead of relying on memory. If you prepare students for ABRSM or Trinity grades, set the scales, pieces and aural work as separate assignments; there's no exam-board integration, you set up the path yourself.
